A Large Project
I was commissioned by W.T. Leung Architects in October 2016 to do all new photography for them to help with a complete website and portfolio redesign by the firm. This was a multi week project, in actuality taking about two months to complete. There were a total of five locations in Vancouver and Richmond that needed photographing and retouching. On top of that the weather at that time was just turning to snow and the light was changing as it tends to do in the fall in Vancouver. I was chasing the light, finding angles, scouting locations, calling around for building access and trying to predict the weather at the same time. Lot’s of moving parts to deal with. Nevertheless the project did get completed and here today are some images from one of my favorite of the locations – The Keefer.
The Keefer, getting it’s name from the street the entrance facing occupies – Keefer Street – is a multi-use mixed residential tower development with retail and commercial space at street level. The design ethos of this project was that of conscientious design and respect.
The development is located near the edges of Vancouver’s 100+ year old Chinatown district, a place of rich historical culture and tradition. The ornamentation pulls reference from the area, including the use of Chinese character detailing on balconies, traditional geometric patterns on siding and the characteristic red coloring of specific materials all pay homage to the area, all without seeming overly gaudy or pretentious.
The design isn’t trying too hard to be “Chinesey“, and in doing such seems very at-home and well placed in the neighborhood.
I shot a variety of angles over a period of three days from street level and adjacent balconies. The interesting geometry of the tower was challenging to capture and as such a large development, I needed the entire three days to cover all the ground I wanted to.
All in all this phase of the photography project was one of my favourites to shoot. The unique design elements were a nice change from the “safer” projects I’ve shot in Vancouver and I hope to see more outstanding design in the city over the coming years.
There is more interesting work coming from the offices of W.T. Leung going to be featured here so please check back in the near future as I’ll be showing more interesting projects of theirs over the next few weeks.
